Cracked Video Game Discs: How to Make Them Playable Again

Some sneaky e-sleuths have found out that Sony is putting together a team tasked with preserving the company's catalog, and we just couldn't be happier about it. Looking at existing video games as if they're imperishable goods is a terrible mistake, one we can't really blame casual players for making since even big companies like Nintendo are adamant about perpetuating it. Yeah, while we might think that just keeping our old discs intact is enough to make our games last forever, there's a lot more work we need to put into that.

Remasters and Re-releases are, at best, still inferior to the original thing, at worst a complete nightmare, but they're something we'll put up with for the much grander goal of video game art preservation.

You might wonder why your PS2 isn't working. Well, if you're getting Disc Read Errors on multiple discs, all of which appear to be in good condition, then you most likely have one of two common problems. Either your laser is being obstructed by dirt and dust, or the laser's voltage is not properly adjusted.

Please note that fine tuning may be needed if your PS2 reads CD games but not audio/PS1 CDs (or vice versa)... Or if you?re PS2 reads DVD games but not DVD movies (or vice versa)... Personally I don't suggest fine tuning without a voltage meter.

It may take a while, but you will most likely find the sweet spot where your discs begin to read again. I have never had to move the screw more than 30 degrees, although I have heard as much as 180 degrees are needed for a modded PS2 to play backup CD-Rs.

12. Try a few different trouble discs before re-assembly to make sure you don?t need more fine adjustment. As well, hold the PS2 elevated in the horizontal position and make sure it reads while in this position. I have found that slightly more voltage (2-6 degrees) is needed to run discs in the horizontal position than the vertical position.

Several months ago, I watched a video demonstrating how to repair scratched game discs using car polish. I tried that, and it didn't work. After a little more research, I found and purchased this plastic polishing kit from Amazon. Following the instructions (and using some ultra fine sandpaper to sand out the really bad scratches), I was able polish and sand out the scratches on one disc, while another remains unplayable, despite repeated repair attempts.

The only way to repair scratches is with a professional disc repair machine. Full disclosure I own and operate one of these as a mail in service. There are many such services but when I used a very popular one and it took 5 weeks to get my kid's games back I decided there was a market for another one.

Rub the disc that will not read with brasso vigorously for about 1 minute then wipe with polishing cloth (yellow duster) with small amount of spit (or water if this disturbs you) then use the toothpaste method, then repeat the brasso for best results. Now install the game (if possible) this should work 9 times out of 10.

I have a PS2 disc that has a crack (or a few anyway) in the clear plastic around center hole. The cracks don't extend to the data layers and the game works just fine, but I'd like to mend it so it doesn't get any worse. What's the best way to do this? I thought about putting some super glue on the cracks to mend them together, would that work?

Those stickers can make the discs too thick and end up scratching agenst the top and\or bottom of the player. I've had this problem with those avery DVD\CD sticker labels in the past doing this exact same thing.

What about melting a pinhole at the end of a crack...to prevent it from spreading further outward? Dunno if this works for discs, but it might be better than the risk of having one shatter in the drive (and possibly damaging the laser carriage). Anyone try it?

I'd leave it as it is. I've got a couple or three cracked discs and I've had no problems with them at all. If it's compatible, rip it to the hard disk in your PS2 and just play the game from that with HD Loader. Problem solved.

I have the same problem. With mine, what it does it either it won't read it, period, or it will read the disc enough to figure out what game it is, but when i press start, the game itself won't load. I've have minimal success in successfully loading a game and being able to play, but it usually ends up crashing and bringing up the same error message that the disc could not be read. I also noticed a strange clicking sound when the Wii cannot read the disc. I haven't been able to take it to a GameStop or anything yet...I've been trying to find some kind of cleaning disc, but no luck so far.

My wii was doing the same thing except it read the disk but got through the intro and then said: an error has occurred press the eject button remove the game disc and turn the power off and then it told me to read a manual for more information I cleaned the disc and got rid of the scratches but it still didn't work it doesn't do this with any other discs plz help what should I do

What I would recommend is to get a cleaning disk (there are some at Dollar Tree) then put the cleaning paste on it then put it in as a normal game. What this will do is it will clean the reading lens but if it still is doing it, instead of buying a new one just take it into Best Buy, they can fix it way cheaper then buying a new one.

In this tutorial, we learn how to use a "no CD" crack to play PC games without a disc. First, go to www.gameburnworld.com and search for your game using the search bar. Once you find the game you want, click on the version that you want. After this, the game will start to download onto your computer using the software you choose. Once it's finished, install it and open up the executable file. Now, move this file and make a copy of it on your desktop. Now you can delete your original copy and place the cracked version where the original used to be. Now you can create a shortcut for the game and go ahead and play!

If you use audio CDs in your small business, a cracked CD doesn't necessarily mean that you've lost its contents forever: using a little ingenuity, you can repair the crack long enough for you to copy the CD's information to a fresh disc. Be sure to address the crack before attempting to play or copy the CD, as the intense spinning movement required to play a disc may worsen the crack, eventually shattering the disc inside your computer and causing damage to your CD drive.

Apply a piece of clear packing tape over the crack on the disc's non-recordable side. Run a single strip of tape straight across the entire CD, covering not only the crack but also the opposite portion of the disc as well. Applying tape across the entire disc keeps the weight balanced, but taping only the cracked portion may throw the disc off balance and cause it to wobble and spin erratically when played.

When you use your Nintendo to play games, you may encounter different kinds of issues such as the Wii/Wii U not reading disc. Do you know the reasons for this issue? Do you want to fix this issue? If yes, you can read this MiniTool post to get the answers.

Yes you can use Minidiscs. Although why would you want to?Apart from them literally being common as dirt and essentially compatible with existing CDR drives?Interestingly its possible if you are careful to mod them if there is a way to calibrate the spindle diameter.
